University of King's College
The University of King’s College was the first University established in English-speaking Canada and is the oldest English-speaking Commonwealth University outside the United Kingdom. It was founded in Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1789 and moved to Halifax in 1923 when a fire destroyed its original buildings. King’s accepted its conditions and became affiliated with Dalhousie University. The property it now occupies was once known as the “Halifax Ladies College”. From 1941 to 1945 King’s College became the “HMCS King’s”, where officers were trained for the Royal Canadian Navy. The academic life of the college continued on in other parts of Halifax during this time, and after WW2, it returned to being King’s College.
Experiences
- A girl reportedly hung herself in the area which is now the back stairwell leading up to “The Roost”. She apparently had a falling out with one of the officers when it was the “HMCS King’s”. Also known as the “Angel’s Roost”, this area was the maids quarters during WW2. Not only has the girl been spotted in the stairwell, but also in the Roost itself. Other small, strange occurrences have been reported in this area as well.
- In an area of King’s College known as “The Pit” a former janitor wearing a yellow jacket has been seen, and upon being noticed, he disappears.
- Smoke has been seen pouring out from underneath the door which leads into the basement from the chapel. The chapel’s crucifixes were apparently once found inverted, too.
- A student one night, while playing basketball alone in the gym, held onto his ball when he heard an odd echo within the gym. The sound turned out to be that of another ball being bounced. There was no one to be seen and no other ball in sight.
Investigations
Summer, 2004
This was more of an informal investigation. Ian, who used to work security at King’s College, gave Rob a tour of the campus and told him about its ghosts. They stayed in the stairwell of the Roost to see if they would have any luck with documenting anything. There were no fluctuations of any kind and nothing appeared in Rob's photographs. While they were there they heard nothing, and being the middle of summer it was a quieter time for the campus, as there were less students around.
When they left the stairwell, Rob met up with some students who were staying in the Roost. They talked about ghosts and the college. When Rob got home, he reviewed the audio tapes, and was surprised at what he found:
EVP 1 Unknown outburst
EVP 2 And again
EVP 3 Unknown whisperer
