Abandoned Radar Base
Some of you may be familiar with the old abandoned building that lies in the woods near the Beaver Bank Villa. Some of you may have been told over the years that this building used to be an insane asylum, and that if you go up there, a nurse with red eyes will fly out of a window and chase you.
Of course, none of this is true. It was never an asylum and there is no terrifying nurse. This abandoned building is in fact the former RCAF Station Beaver Bank. This radar base, which was part of the Pinetree line, opened in 1954 and was active until 1964. For a time it lay dormant until the 1970’s when it became Lundrigans cement plant. After the cement plant closed, the radar base lay dormant and abandoned again, and does to this day. The other remaining buildings and PMQs were demolished in 2004. Is this old building haunted? If so, why would an old radar base be haunted?
Apparently, while the radar base was being built, a worker electrocuted himself and two others died while pouring concrete. When the former base became Lundrigans cement plant an employee was crushed by a pre-cast wall. I’ve been unable to verify these accounts, but if true, they may be the reason behind why the radar base would be haunted.
Experiences
- People over the years have mostly reported seeing figures in the form of shadows (also known as “shadow people”) at the old abandoned radar base.
- Apparently, while at the radar base one night with some friends, a guy was pushed back up onto the roof after stepping back too far. Nothing was seen and the guy’s friends just thought that he had regained his balance. The guy recounted though that he was doomed to fall when an unseen force pushed him back up onto the roof.
- Brent Saulnier and Brandon Knight were up at the radar base one day exploring. After hearing an abnormally large bang, the two men heard a child giggle and then run away. They are confident no one else was at the base with them.
Investigations
Winter, 2003
The radar base is just plain creepy. A long, paved road takes you to it. At night, the forest on each side of you will often rustle as wildlife retreat back into the woods as you make your way.
Once, Rob and Tony crept inside through a hole in the wall not knowing what to expect. They weren’t in there long when suddenly they heard someone walking towards them in the open space down below; they were on the level above. They turned the flashlight on to see what it was and no one was there. In the open space below there was nothing except debris. They turned the flashlight off and it started again. They turned it on and it stopped. They turned the flashlight off and it started again. Rob had turned the flashlight off in the first place to take a picture, and as the walking continued, he took a picture of where the walking was occurring.
Some strange lights appeared in the picture, but this could have been due to the camera’s flash reflecting off of the metal within the building. No fluctuations of any kind were noted.
