York Redoubt National
Historic Site

Experiences | Investigations

This 200 year old fortification is situated overlooking the entrance to Halifax Harbour. Its original batteries were built in 1793, at the outbreak of war between Britain and revolutionary France.

Over the years the site was enlarged and strengthened. There are remnants of the fort which also exist, outside its boundaries, along and near the shoreline. Edward, Duke of Kent, made several improvements between 1795 and 1800. By the early 1860’s, advances in artillery design had made the site obsolete. The re-armament of York Redoubt caused a complete reconstruction and enlargement of the site.

During WW1 the site was used as barracks for assigned infantry and for troops waiting to go overseas. During 1940-42, the Fire Command Post for harbour defenses was built at York Redoubt. Early in WW2, it was the nerve centre for harbour defenses, including an anti-submarine net which stretched across the harbour’s entrance from the Redoubt to McNab’s Island. It is also considered to have had the first radar station constructed in the world. York Redoubt remained in military use until 1956.

Experiences

We've never read, or heard tell, of any accounts of ghosts at York Redoubt. Except for some strange photographs, we’ve never experienced anything there either. Aside from the fact that it’s an interesting place full of history, we only ever went out there because it is an old fort and we thought we might stumble across something paranormal; sometimes unexplained data is obtained just by checking something out which may have the potential of being haunted.

Investigations

February 22nd, 2006
Although long overdue, Tony, Jamie, Dwayne, and Rob returned on the freezing cold night. So as not to trespass, they only investigated a cave fortification that lies outside of York Redoubt’s walls which is public property. During this second visit there were no fluctuations of any kind (except for the mind numbing cold!), nothing appeared in their analog and digital pictures, and there were no audio or video anomalies of any kind.

Tony and Rob first went to York Redoubt in the daytime in August of 2002. They explored the fortifications which were both inside and outside the Redoubt’s walls. Except for these photographs, no other data was collected.
